VS served as design consultant for the downtown pedestrian safety improvement project along Main Street in Fortville.

VS staff worked with the Town, INDOT, local property owners and the Metropolitan Planning Organization to design a streetscape that increased safety, improve walkability, and met the needs and wishes of all stakeholders.

This roadway is the hub of Fortville and is where many of the local businesses are located. As a result, this project required extensive public involvement with Town officials, local property owners and business owners as well other members of the community. VS staff not only completed the roadway portion of the design, which included new, widened sidewalks, additional storm sewer and drainage, and new asphalt but also coordinated the public outreach and hosted meetings for the public and the property/business owners to provide input on the design and construction schedule. The goal of this project was to balance between creating a nicer pedestrian experience while limiting the loss of available parking as well as working within a narrow right of way.
